August 28, 2016
On Wednesday, August 24, beer flowed, laughs were shared, and funds were raised for the 2016 Marathon Exchange Ambassadors at Land Grant Brewery for the 2016 Marathon Exchange Happy Hour. The ambassadors (pictured below with Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon Director Darris Blackford) will be running marathons in Curitiba, Brazil (November 20); Hefei, China (November 12); and Dresden, Germany (October 23). Five runners are going to Dresden, three are going to Hefei, and three are going to Curitiba for the exchange. In addition to these ambassadors, local business leader Paul Carringer, CEO of Caring Marketing, will be running all of the marathons. The Wednesday gathering celebrated the hard work that the runners have already put in and brought together the runners with GCSCI, Dresden Sister City Inc., the Columbus Marathon, as well as friends, family, and the running community.
Each city in the exchange will also be sending ambassadors to Columbus to participate in the Columbus Marathon on October 16. Dresden has six runners coming to Central Ohio, while Curitiba and Hefei have three, respectively.
“The Land Grant happy hour was a fun way to connect our Marathon Exchange Ambassadors with the Columbus running community, as well as with the GCSCI and Dresden Sister City organizations,” said Tim Sword, President of Greater Columbus Sister Cities International. “It was a tremendous opportunity to bring people together and celebrate the important role of international connection through athletics,” Sword added.
Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon Director Darris Blackford came out on Wednesday to speak and to support the runners, while stressing the importance of international connection in the running community. This is the first year that Columbus will be hosting runners from Hefei and Curitiba, and the fifth year that Columbus will be participating in the exchange with Dresden, Germany.
